Kagami Biraki 2010

(Opening Ceremony)

Sunday January 17, 2010 – 1:00 pm

The Newmarket Budokan Judo Club invites you to attend our yearly Kagami Biraki.

Kagami Biraki literally means "Mirror Opening" (also known as the "Rice Cutting Ceremony").  It is a traditional Japanese celebration that is held in many traditional martial arts schools.  It was an old samurai tradition dating back to the 15th century that was adopted into modern martial arts starting in 1884 when Jigoro Kano (the founder of judo) instituted the custom at the Kodokan, his organization's headquarters.

Our Kagami Biraki will consist of a short class where students from the Dog Pack and the Intermediate class will demonstrate some ne waza (ground techniques) and nage waza (throwing techniques).  This will be followed by belt promotions and presentations of awards.

All participants are encouraged to wear their judogi or arrive at least 15 minutes early as changing space is limited.

There will be a club photo following the Kagami Biraki, so bring your cameras.
